Missed Free Throws Cost Gents in 89-80 OT loss at Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Gents managed a 25-for-38 (65.8 percent) shooting night from the line, but they only managed a 4-for-10 mark in the final seven minutes of regulation as Centenary (13-10, 6-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Schreiner (9-14, 3-9 SCAC) 89-80 in overtime Friday night, February 12.

Conversely, Schreiner sealed the win by going 8-for-12 from the charity stripe in overtime.

Centenary trailed by six with three minutes to go in the game, but junior Kendall Demouchet answered with a three to cut the deficit in half. Sophomore Travion Kirkendoll, who scored 20 in the game, split from the line. Christian Pena answered with a triple for Schreiner, but back-to-back layups by junior James Sapp and Kirkendoll cut the deficit to one with a minute left. The visitors split from the line with 10 seconds left, but Kirkendoll made a layup to send the game to overtime.

Sapp came off the bench for a game high 22 on 6-10 shooting from the field and an 8-13 mark from the line.

Kirkendoll and Sapp made shots to put the visitors up four a minute in to overtime, but the free throw line helped the Mountaineers rally for the nine-point win.

Demouchet added 17 points and four blocks before fouling out of the game for the Maroon and White.

Trailing 20-19 in the first half, Centenary went on a 10-1 run to take its largest lead of the game. Demouchet hit a conventional three and freshman Treylan Matthews followed with a fastbreak, old-fashioned three. Schreiner split from the line, but Kirkendoll and senior DJ Hicks both added layups.

With Schreiner down 32-24 with 5:31 left in the half, the home team scored 10 unanswered to take the lead. Nathan Robbins and Pena split from the line before Wes Miller made a fastbreak layup. Another Miller jumper and a pair from Pena tied the game. Blake Kelley made a fastbreak layup to put Schreiner ahead with 1:46 left until half. Sapp made a triple with 18 seconds left as Centenary held a 35-34 lead at intermission.

A Jared Thompson three and a Josh Bradford layup gave Schreiner a 64-55 lead with 7:26 left in regulation.

Five reached double-digits in scoring for Schreiner, led by Pena and Bradford with 17. Thompson made all three triple attempts to finish with 13.

Centenary finishes up SCAC play Saturday, February 13, against Trinity. Game time is set for 4 p.m.
