Be the Cure!

Little Bryce Boyd from Monroe, Louisiana is only four months old. At birth, the nurses told his parents they knew something was not right; he was covered with little blood spots called petechiae, a sign of internal bleeding. When they checked his blood count, they found that Bryce's platelet count was very low.

Bryce was immediately taken to another hospital for evaluation. It took nearly 3 months to correctly diagnose him with Wiskott-Aldrich Syndrome, an illness that affects his platelets.

Bryce has been relying on donor platelets to keep him alive, but will need a stem cell transplant to hopefully cure him.

For the basketball games Friday and Sunday, there will be a sign up for the Marrow Registry Drive in the Gold Dome. Signees must be 18-44, willing to donate to ANY patient and meet the heath guidelines.

Sapp on D3 Hoops

Junior James Sapp, who is seventh in the nation with 11.9 rebounds per game and eighth in the country with 4.89 offensive boards per game, was recently interviewed by D3hoops.com

According to D3hoops.com: James Sapp didn't start out his college career as a basketball player.

A former state champion in high school in the 400-meter dash, he ran track at Division I Louisiana-Monroe his freshman year. He soon decided it wasn't the sport for him at the next level.

"In high school I wasn't sure about my options so I went with running track," Sapp said. "I've always loved basketball and I felt like that is what I wanted to do after that first year. I called up the coaches here and it worked out for me to be on the team."

It turned out to be the perfect fit. In fact, last season, the junior forward was named the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Player of the Year. He was third third consecutive Centenary player to earn the honor and just the second sophomore to earn it.

Hard work led to that success.

Edwards, who holds the career record for blocks for the Ladies, leads the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference and is 28th in the nation with 47 blocks. As a team, Centenary leads the SCAC and is 36th in the nation with 88 total blocks.

Clean Sweep!

For the first time in the five years under head coach Jackie Fain's guidance, the Centenary College gymnastics team swept the Midwest Independent Conference's weekly gymnastics awards. Sophomore Ashley White was selected Gymnast of the Week while freshman Navia Jordan wrapped up Specialist honors.

Last Sunday at Texas Woman's quad, Centenary picked up its first win of the season against Air Force. The Ladies easily turned in the best score of the competition in beam, receiving a 48.250, more than six-tenths better than the other three teams. Its score also was better than 10th-ranked Georgia that week.

On Friday, Centenary tallied a 190.425 to take over the top ranking among NCAA Division III teams. It was also the first time a DIII school received a score better than 190.
