Leathers snatches 18 boards in loss at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. - Miles Leathers had a career night on the boards, but it wasn't enough to lift Brevard to its second South Atlantic Conference win of the season in a 65-58 defeat at Anderson Wednesday night.

Leathers tied a school record with 18 rebounds on the evening, becoming the fourth NCAA-era Brevard (2-10, 1-5 SAC) player to reach the mark. Listed at just 6'3", Leathers became the shortest player in Divisions I or II this season to record at least 18 rebounds in a single game.

"I'm happy for Miles," said head coach Lee Burgess. "He worked his tail off getting the boards. For somebody to be able to do that is certainly a testament to his ability."

Leathers became the first Brevard player in two years to total 18 rebounds in a single game. He nearly doubled the total of Anderson's (5-8, 3-4 SAC) Rakish Taylor, who entered the game as the league leader in both total rebounds and offensive rebounding. He moved into second place on Brevard's NCAA-era rebounding list and surpassed Jonathan Whitson for third in the NCAA-era scoring.

The Tornados led Anderson 56-55 at the final media timeout with 1:52 to play. But a triple by Tre' Fields, one of eight by the Trojans on 27 attempts, gave Anderson a lead it would not relinquish. The Trojans finished the game on a 9-3 run, connecting on three of their final five shots from the field.

Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm, with Brevard connecting on 39.7 percent of its shots from the field and Anderson knocking down 34.4 percent of its attempts. The Tornados held a 28-22 advantage in points in the paint, but the Anderson reserves outpaced the Brevard bench 21-5 behind a 15-point effort from Fields.

Alex Moe led all scorers with a season-high 19 points that included five shots from beyond the arc. Leathers added 12 points and four assists to his rebounding total, while Demarcus Threatt also scored in double figures with 13 points.

The Tornados got off to a hot start, knocking down five of their first six shots from the field to race out to a 12-0 lead in the game's first 3:06. But the Trojans quickly battled back, taking their first lead nearly six minutes later after an 18-5 run that included four triples.

After a back-and-forth remainder of the first half, the Tornados closed the first stanza on a 9-1 run, holding Anderson to an 0-for-5 shooting performance from the floor over the final 3:37 of the half.

In the second half, neither team led by more than five points until the final minute as the teams swapped the lead seven times and battled to seven ties. Taylor was 4-for-6 from the field in the second stanza for the Trojans, including four crucial points during Anderson's final surge in the last two minutes.

The Tornados return to action against Catawba on Saturday in a contest that will be televised locally on WMYA My40. Tipoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
