Late goal spoils Brevard?s chance of an upset

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Brevard College's men's soccer team went toe-to-toe with 13th-ranked Carson-Newman on Saturday evening, but a late goal from the Eagles gave them the 1-0 victory. Wtih the setback, Brevard falls to 4-8-2 overall and 4-4-2 in South Atlantic Conference play.

Prior to the match starting, Brevard clinched a berth in the South Atlantic Conference championship as Coker lost in an afternoon bout to Queens, preventing them from passing the Tornados in the standings. This will be the first time since the 2010 campaign that the royal blue and white have advanced into the postseason. This unit has put together the most SAC wins for Brevard since joining the conference in the 2008 season.

Heath Turner did all he could for the Tornados to keep them in the contest, stopping the first 12 shots on goal to match his career-best.

Brevard managed to put pressure on Carson-Newman in the 13th minute, when they strung together a pair of shots on goal. Andrew Gallowitch took the first shot of the attack, Brevard's first of the match, which was saved by the home goalkeeper and sent out of bounds. Gabriel Garcia took the preceding corner kick and blasted it perfectly for Ryan McPhillips to head the ball towards the goal, but it too was saved.

On Brevard's following corner kick, coming in the 65th minute, Garcia sent the ball in the air with Alec Goettl lined up for the header, but it went wide left. The Tornados got one more corner in the match, but couldn't produce a shot from it.

With the match looking to go into overtime, Carson-Newman picked up the intensity with three consecutive shots fired at Turner in a 100 second span, all three saved by Turner. In the 84th minute the Eagles finally managed to best Brevard's goalkeeper to take the 1-0 advantage and the match.

McPhillips and Shawn Schoenfeld both had two shots, with Schoenfeld's both being on target. Goettl, Gallowitch and Garcia all got one shot off.

The Tornados are back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 28 when they host Laurel at 3:30 p.m.
