SAN ANTONIO, Texas - While the home team scored the first point of the game, the Gents just countered with 18 points of their own in a four-minute span.

The Maroon and White rattled off 18-straight points, and never led by less than 11 the rest of the game, as Centenary (14-10, 7-7 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) wrapped up the four seed in the SCAC Tournament with a convincing 89-74 win against Trinity (9-15, 5-8) Saturday afternoon, February 13.

Trinity won the tip and split from the line for its only lead of the game, but Centenary countered by making its first seven shots from the field - including four from three.

Conversely, Trinity missed its first seven shots and committed three turnovers to begin the game.

Down 1-0, sophomore Travion Kirkendoll hit a jumper and a triple. Junior James Sapp made a fastbreak layup and then a jumper to push the lead to 9-1. However, the Gents went bombs away in its next three shots. First, freshman Treylan Matthews entered the scoring column with back-to-back threes. Kirkendoll punctuated the run with a triple, and the Maroon and White led 18-1 just four minutes into the game.

Sapp came off the bench for 28, including a 12-for-16 shooting night. Kirkendoll added the double-double with 26 points and a game-best 12 boards and five assists. Matthews finished with 12. The Gents used a blazing first half shooting, making 19-for-31 (61.3 percent) from the field.

Centenary shot 33-for-62 (53.2 percent) for the game.

Trinity cut in to 25-10, but a Sapp jumper and a three from junior Brandon Campbell pushed the visitors advantage to 20 just 10 minutes into the game.

Trinity cut the deficit to 11 on an old-fashioned three by Bean Beatie early in the second half, but freshman Mitchell Tarantolo answered with a jumper and a three by Kirkendoll quickly pushed the lead back to 11.

Beatie made another three-point play and Khambrel Roach made a pair from the charity stripe to bring the home team back within 11 with six minutes left, but sophomore Dyllon Weaver hit a triple and Kirkendoll added a jumper to push the Centenary lead back to 16.

The Gents lead remained between 12-16 points the final five minutes.

Beatie led Trinity with 15 points, while Roach came off the bench for 14.

Centenary wraps up regular season play next Saturday when it welcomes Dallas Christian to the Gold Dome. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
