Historic campaign ends in conference quarterfinals

JEFFERSON CITY, TENN. - Brevard College's men's soccer team made its return to the South Atlantic Conference Men's Soccer Championship, falling to No. 1 seed Carson-Newman 4-0. Brevard ends the season at 5-10-2 overall.

It was a historic season for the Tornados, as the unit produced the best winning percentage since Brevard joined the NCAA in 2008 while also posting the most South Atlantic Conference wins in program history.

The defense was one of the conference's best this season, ranking in the tops of the league in goals allowed average. Goalkeeper Heath Turner was the catalyst of the defense, ranking first in the conference at the conclusion of the regular season with a 0.809 save percentage.

The defensive line of Omar Jimenez, Caleb Hall, Chris Efenecy and Henrique Joaquim all contributed in Brevard allowing the fewest shots on goal from the opposition in the NCAA era. The backs were consistent all season, with three seeing the field in 16 of Brevard's 17 matches with Efenecy appearing in every contest.

The offensive duo of Gabriel Garcia and Ryan McPhillips became the first pair to record double digit points in a season since the Tornados inaugural year in the NCAA in 2008 with 11 and 10. Garcia tied McPhillips in his first year with the Tornados in goals with four while tied with Efenecy in assists with three.

Andrew Gallowitch made Brevard history at the beginning of the match as the cap marked his 67th career appearance in the royal blue and white, an NCAA era record. Over his four year career, Gallowitch appeared in over 95 percent of the Tornados' matches. The lone senior on the team is the only player in the NCAA era to record a hat trick.

Carson-Newman (15-2-1), ranked 14th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division II poll, broke the scoreless match in the 37th minute of play, doubling the lead three minutes later to head into halftime up 2-0. The Eagles added two more scores in the second half.
Turner stopped eight shots to put his season ended total to 80, three shy of matching her career-high from his freshman campaign.

Brevard got seven shots off in the contest, with two on goal from Shawn Schoenfeld and Joaquim.
