First half goal drops Centenary against Texas Lutheran, 1-0

SHREVEPORT, LA - The Gents defense held the Bulldogs in check, but a goal by the visitors halfway through the first half held up as Centenary College (1-5, 0-2 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Texas Lutheran (4-1, 1-1 SCAC) 1-0 Friday night at Mayo Field.

"We are getting closer to where we need to be, but we need the light bulb to go off for this team," said head coach Emmett Rutkowski. "When it does, and we hold each other accountable in games, we will start getting the results we hope to achieve."

The Gents pushed the action in the opening 17 minutes as they garnered a pair of corner kicks, a freshman Chase Clark blocked kick, and a junior Jeremy Klespis shot grabbed by the Bulldogs. Senior Jake Morrison also helped keep the visitors off the scoreboard when he cleared a shot going in right post for Texas Lutheran.

The Bulldogs scored their lone goal when, after a corner kick, the ball squirted towards midfield. David Ching had a deflection land at his feet before he ripped a shot and found the back of the net from about 35 yards out.

Junior Rylan Whan (1-3) played the whole game in goal for the Maroon and White, grabbing five saves on six shots faced. Jonathan Michael (4-1) recorded the shutout for Texas Lutheran, grabbing a save in both halves.

Centenary returns to action Sunday, September 20, when it takes on Southwestern at Mayo Field at 2 p.m.
