Last-second goal spoils Brevard?s conference opener

BREVARD, N.C. - After over 89 minutes of physical defense from Brevard College's men's soccer team, Lincoln Memorial University's Leionardo Da Silva found the back of the net for the game-winning goal in a 1-0 thriller. With the loss Brevard falls to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in South Atlantic Conference play.

This is the second-straight time that Brevard and LMU (4-0, 1-0 SAC) have played a 1-0 contest at Brevard soccer field as the visitors won by an identical score in 2013.

BC got the first shot in the conference opener for both sides in the fourth minute on a free kick, but Gabriel Garcia's attempt was blocked by a Railsplitters' defender. Lincoln Memorial took three shots on target in the opening frame with goalie Heath Turner saving all of them.

Lincoln Memorial came out firing in the second half, blasting two shots in the first two minutes. LMU kept the attack going with two more shots before Brevard managed to get the ball in enemy territory and get a shot off, forcing goalie Pedro Ozi to dive for the save. Off of Garcia's shot on goal, Alex Gerondidakis got the rebound from the save and put up a shot of his own but it went wide left.

In the final minute of play Brevard drew a foul, setting up the Railsplitters game-winning score. Da Silva took the free kick and got the rebound off the deflected cross, allowing him to dribble closer and take the shot.

Garcia paced the offense with a pair of shots and the Tornados lone shot on goal. Turner logged the entire match in goal, saving four shots.

Brevard is back in action on Saturday, Sept. 19 when they travel to Coker for a 7 p.m. match.
