Gents fight back, fall in double overtime to Schreiner

KERRVILLE, Texas - The Gents overcame an own goal to force overtime and were 24 seconds from at least a point, but the Mountaineers quickly turned a save into a golden goal as Centenary (2-7, 1-4 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference) fell to Schreiner (3-6, 1-4 SCAC) 2-1 in the second overtime.

While Centenary allowed an own goal in the 14th minute, freshman Nick Hammond scored his first collegiate goal for the equalizer in the second half. After a pair of Centenary fouls, junior Jeremy Klespis touched it to Hammond, who beat a man in the box and snuck the ball in near post to tie the game.

Junior goalie Rylan Whan grabbed six of his nine saves in the second half to help force overtime.

Schreiner pushed the tempo early in the first overtime with four corner kicks and a pair of shots on target, but freshman Chase Clark saw his header saved as the teams went to double overtime.

Sophomore Ivann Amaya put a shot on goal in the final minute for the Gents, but Schreiner saw an opening, raced down the field, and Gregg Guitierrez header found the back of the net just 18 seconds later for the game winner.

Whan (2-5) grabbed nine saves and allowed two goals, increasing his SCAC-leading number of saves to 60 for the year - 22 better than his nearest competitor. Blake Lawson picked up the win for Schreiner in only 10 minutes in the box, grabbing the only shot faced.

The Gents return to action next Friday, October 2, taking on Dallas at 2 p.m.
